This small takeaway shop perched on top of St Michael’s Hill offers the real deal when it comes to traditional Gujarati home cooking and is (we think) one of the finest purveyors of Indian food in Bristol.
Tiffins is unlike any other Indian takeaway I’ve had in Bristol. Food is precooked and can be either re-heated on site or given to you with instructions for how to heat at home. Don’t be put off by the use of microwaves here as the food being reheated is fantastic. Wonderfully authentic, packed with flavour, well priced and pretty healthy as takeaways go.
The menu is wonderfully concise. Kheema lamb, chicken or a selection of vegetarian curries served with rice, chapattis, naan or papadoms. I’ve tried all of the dishes now and have been amazed over and over by the depth of flavour.
The kheema lamb is hot, a kick of spice which rushes through your sinuses with a rich and meaty flavour. The vegetarian curries are more varied in heat, I love the saag paneer, a milder dish combining spinach with cubes of creamy Indian cheese. Other stand out veggie curries I’ve tried include the hotter cauliflower and coconut curry and the more medium potato dishes.
Veggie curries vary on a daily basis so it’s always worth asking for more information on what’s on offer. The owners are wonderfully friendly and full of advice. You won’t go far wrong on these recommendations.
And it’s not just the main meals which are worth shouting about. Even the side dishes here are worth a mention.The naan breads are huge, the papadoms spicy – it’s the coriander and coconut chutney which I’m really raving about though.
The freshness of coriander combined with sweet and creamy coconut and a nice wallop of chilli. My boyfriend has tried to recreate this time and time again and whilst his attempts are good, they don’t come close to the original. (I have it on good authority that they’ve been offered millions for the recipe but won’t give it up)
A special mention also goes out to the khichadi and khadi which the Bristol Foodie baby has tried and loves. A plain but nourishing rice and green lentil dish which Tiffins has advised me is used for weaning babies across India. This was Leo’s first proper curry and he wolfed it down. The rice is filling and the lentils full of protein making it a great baby food. Tiffins’ recipe is posted up on the window so this is definitely one I’ll be replicating at home.
