Comfy armchairs, local art, mismatch furniture, The Social on Stokes Croft is the kind of establishment which is well suited to breakfast, lunch or drinks in the evening
In typical Stokes Croft style, The Social offers simple, home cooked dishes served in a casual setting and made with local produce. There is a good selection of vegetarian and vegan fare and The Social price themselves on veggie options not being “an afterthought” but providing lots of different options.
My first visit was for Sunday brunch a few weeks ago. We sat back on the chesterfields clutching hot cups of coffee and tea deliberating over what to order. Some of my friends went for the full cooked breakfast, my boyfriend, Sam, chose to keep it simple with a sausage sandwich and I had the bubble and squeak with poached egg and mushrooms.
Food arrived quickly and everyone agreed that their breakfasts tasted great. My poached egg was well cooked and the mushrooms tasty. The bubble and squeak did the job however could have done with a bit more seasoning and perhaps a bit more veg as well – nonetheless, I wolfed it down and the meal as a whole, was a success.
A couple of weeks later we returned with my in-laws in tow looking for a midweek lunch. I was impressed to see their lunchtime offer. A handmade sourdough bap with chips and a soft drink for a fiver! I went for fish of the day (mackerel) Sam chose braised shoulder of lamb bap, my mother in law the veggie option of beetroot and goats cheese and my father in law, the beef sandwich.
At a first glance the chips looked slightly underdone however on tasting them they were crispy and cooked to perfection. Our sandwiches all tasted great, I loved my mackerel and we all agreed that for the price this was great value.
Since then, I’ve also tried the pulled pork bun, deliciously tasty with lots of smokey flavours and crunchy slaw.
It’s not just the food but the laid back one-stop shop that I’ve come to love about the social. As a new mum I find that in addition to serving good food, I’m now looking for places which are a comfortable atmosphere where we can go as a family with baby and buggy in tow, as well as those which are super cool and casual. The Social is a definite winner in my book!
