Bar Chocolat (formerly Meme) review: A chocaholic’s dream

Updated October 2013: This review is a bit of an old one. Meme Chocolat is now called Bar Chocolat. The name might be different but the coffee and chocolates are as scrummy as ever.

Saturday is a day for milling around Clifton village, popping into shops and maybe stopping for lunch, but my favourite stop of all is MeMe Chocolat.

Armed with the papers, there is nothing better than popping in for a cup of coffee or chocolate and watching the world go by.

My personal favourite is the dark chocolate mocha. A perfect combination of that caffeine kick and luxuriously rich chocolate.

The hot chocolates are also good, particularly the ‘ultimate’ hot chocolate – so thick you could nearly stand your spoon up in it, topped with marshmallows, cream and chocolate flakes – you don’t get much dreamier than that for a chocaholic.

The display of cakes and chocolates is enough to break anyone’s best lent intentions, with recipes like Mississippi mud pie and chocolate, almond and orange truffle cake, they really are hard to resist, and reasonably priced for homemade.

MeMe (I think this is said me me and not Même – although this is an ongoing foodie debate) also does breakfast and lunch, if forever reason you want to do savoury. The sandwiches and paninis, whilst not as impressive as the chocolate, make for a great quick bite on a lunchtime.

Verdict: If you’re ever at a loose end on the weekend Bar Chocolat really is worth a visit – particularly if you are partial to chocolate. Bristol Foodie takes no responsibility for any weight gain caused as a result of this recommendation!
