Old Market is just a stones throw from Cabot Circus yet surprisingly underrated for it’s foodie offerings. Or until now that is.
After several months working round the corner, I’ve uncovered some absolute gems which are well worth checking out for anyone living, working or just visiting Old Market.
Old Market Assembly
25 West Street, Old Market, Bristol BS2 0DF
When the team behind The Canteen and No1 Harbourside took this place over, they caused something of a buzz on the foodie scene. Expect a relaxed atmosphere, locally sourced food, tasty coffee and a nice selection of wines, beers etc.
The menu offers a good selection of vegan and vegetarian food as well as fish and meat. The £5 lunch deal is an absolute steal. It changes regularly but highlights for me so far have been mussels and dips, a taco salad and mussels.
Here’s a #vegan one from our #FoodForAFiver Express Lunch menu. Say hello to the #Pizzette – Wild Forest of Dean mushrooms grilled with hoi sin sauce, Spring onions, coriander and cucumber. Topped with cashew & chilli ‘cheese’ and served on @tomabakery toasted sourdough with #severnproject leaves on the side. A photo posted by Old Market Assembly (@oldmarketassembly) on
Alex Does Coffee
61 Old Market St, BS2 0EJ
Technically, not a place to eat, but certainly one to drink. Alex Does Coffee is a simple coffee house situated in Old Market Studios. The coffee here is supplied by local roasters Extract Coffee and a selection of teas are also available as well as a few snacks, though no kitchen for fresh meals.
Expect brilliant takeaway coffee, an eclectic mix of local art on the walls and various artists popping in and out of the studios / working in the background.

13 Midland Road, Bristol BS2 0JT
Offering brilliant takeaway food just off the main stretch of Market Street. A choice of meat, veggie and vegan options and discounts offered for those who bring their own containers to reduce waste. It goes without saying that a tiffin is the receptacle of choice.
Expect quality curries and exciting salads to take out or to be delivered (by bike!) to your office.
24 Old Market Street, Bristol, BS2 0HB
I bloody love a bagel so Bagelicious was a brilliant find in Old Market. Choose from signature or deluxe fillings, served on a bagel of your choice – poppy seeds, sesame, jalapeno… it’s your call. My personal favourite has to be brief and grape or good old smoked salmon (you can’t go wrong!)
Expect well priced bagels with a decent range of fillings, perfect for a quick lunchtime stop off.
57 West St, Bristol BS2 0BZ
Further up Market Street is Fi-Real. A vegan /vegetarian cafe and restaurant which prides itself on serving unique and tasty Caribbean food. Portions are generous and the colours and flavours of the dishes are vibrant and delicious.
