Updated January 2015: My offices are just 5minutes walk from The Big Chill, so since writing his review I’ve returned pretty frequently. The burgers are still pretty good and it’s a great spot to hang out with colleagues and friends. In warmer weather the sun terrace is a great spot. A bargain when there’s an offer on.
Tucked away on Small Street in central Bristol, Big Chill is one of those super cool venues; art on the walls, a great selection of drinks and cocktails, an upstairs bar and garden terrace, relaxed vibe and the opportunity for a boogie when the lights turn low.
Daytimes and early evenings it also offers burgers and a couple of key dishes, perfect for a chilled lunch or some early evening nosh (food to line your stomach) before a heavier night.
The burger menu is vast with thirteen different burgers to choose from. These range from the ABC (beef burger with Avocado, Bacon and Cheddar) to a Marrakesh (lamb with hoummous, aubergine and harissa) to a Crimini (mushroom and goats cheese). Prices are reasonable – £6.50 to £7.25 however this doesn’t include any chips or sides which need to be ordered as an additional item (annoying I know). There are regular offers for half price burgers though which makes it very affordable – keep your eye on their Facebook and twitter for info.
Portions are healthy – these burgers are stacked high! Generally speaking the burgers are tasty and hit the spot however food quality is a little inconsistent – sometimes they are amazing, sometimes it’s a bit mediocre. Of the sides I really recommend the sweet potato chips (seriously they are to die for!) one portion should be enough for two people to share.
The servers are undeniably friendly if a little ditzy – service can be a little chaotic and at times inefficient. Unnecessary waits for food, meals not coming out together, servers not knowing where the meals are going at all… that sort of thing.
I guess the thing with The Big Chill is that they are not a restaurant… they’re a bar, a very good bar. But nonetheless they are first and foremost a bar, the burgers are secondary.
All in all, it’s a great place for a casual lunch or a quick bite with friends and despite the niggles I’ve mentioned, the food is generally good and we do keep going back for more which in itself speaks volumes.
